How do I get rid of slugs from my house?

Asked by Moiraes Fate     Posted in     Other - Home & Garden     2011-03-17 08:17:37      Answers (2)

I noticed some slime trails but didn't think much of it since I moved to New Orleans, but then I noticed something else...

Two small and rather wide brown slugs near my cats bowl. I thought... ewwww... maybe they got in through a crack under the door, picked them up and got rid of them.

But then I started noticing more slime trails, and then recently actually found a rather large muddy yellow one INSIDE her dish. No wonder she was over there looking but wouldn't actually go near her food. I tossed out the food and the dish it was on (it was only a paper plate) and then moved her food into another room.

Problem is that the slime trails are multiplying, and I found one thin slug about an inch long and another thin one about a quarter of an inch long come out from under the wall near the door. EWWWWWW

Got rid of them too and I placed a long thick trail of salt at the bottom of the wall.

These things are just nasty. I don't care if they exist, so long as they exist OUTSIDE my house and away from my pet.

Can these things poison her if she eats them?

Any ideas?

Salt won't do it by putting them on the trail.

Morton Salt "when it rains it pours'. Do you know what that means? When you see a slug, you sprinkle salt on them, and they automatically shrivel up.

THAT'S when you need the salt.

When we moved in our house, we have slugs the size of a garden snake, I mean huge!!!!!
We didn't use poison because we have a dog and child. But my wife, every time it rains, she takes the salt shaker and go hunt for slugs. The following year, the slugs got smaller and smaller and smaller to baby slugs.

They will slime under your door to get in your home. The salt was smart. A copper pipe will help too. I would put a length of copper piping, on the ground, under each window of the house and any vents. The piping will not hurt your plants like the salt would. Also set out shallow dishes of beer at night to attract them outside your home. They will drink the beer and die happily.

Slugs are a pest but normally only for about a month. Make a moat around the kitty's dish with salt big enough for kitty to get inside.
